Intervention at CIUSSS de la Mauricie-et-du-Centre-du-Québec

The Québec Ombudsman received three reports concerning Les résidences du Chemin du Roy, a group of five private seniors’ residences, namely, Béthanie, Notre-Dame, Cénacle, Yamachiche and Villa Soleil. They are located on the territory of Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS) de la Mauricie-et-du-Centre-du-Québec.

The allegations pointed to various failings that, among other things, jeopardized the safety of the residents. The Québec Ombudsman decided to intervene.

Findings

The investigation showed that there were numerous problems. Les Résidences du Chemin du Roy admits people with clearly defined clinical profiles. People with wandering behaviour or major cognitive losses should not be accepted as residents. However, people who did not fit into the pre-established profile categories lived there anyway. As a result, the care and services provided were not adapted to their condition, and their safety was severely compromised.

When the investigation was completed, the Québec Ombudsman made three recommendations to CIUSSS de la Mauricie-et-du-Centre-du-Québec, which accepted all of them. The Québec Ombudsman will keep an eye on their implementation.
