On March 27, 2024, Ombudsperson Marc-André Dowd sent a letter to the National Assembly’s Committee on Land and the Public Domain. In it, he commented on Bill 45 – Act to amend the Act respecting safety in sports mainly to better protect the integrity of persons in recreation and sports.
While he endorses the purpose of Bill 45, the Ombudsperson feels that the role of the recreation and sports integrity ombudsman, a position to be created under the Bill, must be fleshed out.
In his letter, Mr. Dowd made six recommendations, among other things, aimed at:
- Improving the process established for handling complaints;
- Making it possible for complainants to decide whether a copy of their complaint can be forwarded to the sports federation or the organization concerned;
- Ensuring that the information conveyed is handled by the right form of recourse.
