The Protecteur du citoyen was invited to appear before the Viens Commission (Public Inquiry Commission on relations between Indigenous Peoples and certain public services in Québec) on March 14, 2018.

Marie Rinfret, Ombudsperson, and Robin Aubut-Fréchette, Assistant Deputy Ombudsman, Citizen and User Services, both made a presentation to the Commission.

The Ombudsperson outlined the institution’s various mandates as well as certain possible initiatives by the Protecteur du citoyen to:

  • become better acquainted with Aboriginal people and communities;
  • enable them to be better acquainted with us;
  • provide better support in handling their complaints;
  • improve their access to public services.

Robin Aubut-Fréchette explained the Protecteur du citoyen’s role regarding Québec’s correctional services by discussing the institution’s investigation report on detention conditions, the administration of justice and crime prevention in Nunavik, published in 2016.
