On June 3, 2022, Québec Ombudsman Marc-André Dowd sent a letter to the Minister of Public Security, Geneviève Guilbault. In it, he commented on the draft Regulation respecting the financial assistance that may be granted to members of a deceased person’s family to cover expenses incurred for legal assistance and representation during certain inquests by a coroner.

Mr. Dowd applauds this draft regulation but points out nonetheless that additional financial assistance should be granted in certain exceptional situations. Any such amounts should be defined in the draft regulation. The Québec Ombudsman therefore made two recommendations.

Mr. Dowd took advantage of the letter to comment on an amendment in another draft regulation that will enable more people to be coroners. The Québec Ombudsman salutes this gain.
