On March 8, 2021, Québec Ombudsperson Marie Rinfret sent the Chair of the Committee on Public Finance, Mr. Jean-François Simard, a letter concerning Bill 74, Act to give effect to fiscal measures announced in the Budget Speech delivered on 10 March 2020 and to certain other measures.
The Québec Ombudsperson’s comments concern the refundable tax credit for caregivers. Ms. Rinfret applauds the intention to simplify the credit and to enable more people to qualify for it. However, she made two recommendations to the Committee on Public Finance aimed at:
- Making the credit available to informal caregivers who attend to people who live in a private seniors’ residence;
- Allowing care recipients to designate who will receive the credit.
