Body

The Protecteur du citoyen was informed about problems related to the care and services provided to patients at Hôpital de Matane. It decided to intervene.

Findings

The Protecteur du citoyen saw significant shortcomings in the clinical procedure within the hospital. In theory, the procedure should begin in the emergency room and continue on the medicine unit. The procedure ends when the patient is discharged and includes several essential steps for ensuring safe and customized health care and health services. The investigation showed that the nursing staff neglected some of these steps. For example, when someone comes to the emergency room, sometimes all the relevant information about their health is not collected. Flaws were also seen in the medical management of patients 65 years old and over.

The Protecteur du citoyen is aware that the hospital is grappling with staffing issues. However, the quality of care and services to patients should not be affected.

The Protecteur du citoyen made six recommendations to Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux (CISSS) du Bas-Saint-Laurent, the institution responsible for the care and services provided by Hôpital de Matane.

All the recommendations were accepted.
