Compensation for crime victims: for effective and prompt management of vulnerable people

In an investigation report released on September 15, 2016, the Protecteur du citoyen homes in on the main problems that need correcting in the public compensation system for crime victims (IVAC): long wait times, gaps in information to victims, and difficulties accessing the system and the system’s services and indemnities.

The Protecteur du citoyen feels that action must be taken immediately and makes 33 recommendations that could be implemented without changing the current legal framework.

According to Québec Ombudsperson Raymonde Saint-Germain, "these vulnerable victims need a swift, empathetic and effective response from IVAC so that they, having qualified, can be given the best care. The investigation we carried out showed that, unfortunately, this isn’t always the case."
