Does your child have a disability? Services and financial support are available for both you and your child, even if your child has reached adulthood. Here is an overview of what you may be eligible for.
Community services
First, please note that most of the services offered by your local community service centre (CLSC) can continue as usual. Please check with the professional handling your child’s file.
Help based on your child’s needs
Is your child a person with a disability who is of full age and is capable of caring for themselves and managing their property? In that case, any financial assistance and services to which they are entitled will be provided directly to them.
Among other things, your child may be eligible for:
- The Amount for a Severe and Prolonged Impairment in Mental or Physical Functions
- The Refundable Tax Credit for Medical Expenses
- The Disability Supports Deduction
- Disability benefits under the Québec Pension Plan
In addition, depending on their needs, other services or financial assistance may be available. For example:
If your child is a student…
They could receive an allowance for their special needs and specialized services.
If your child works…
They may be eligible for the Basic Income Program and the Adapted Work Premium. Services are also available to help your child find or keep a job. Read our article, Disabilities and employment: making it easier to get into the job market.
If your child needs a device to correct their impairment or to compensate for their disability…
Assistive devices programs have been developed to accommodate these needs.
If your child wants to buy a property that meets their special needs…
They may be eligible for the Home Buyers’ Tax Credit. The new Tax Credit for Access to Homeownership may also be of interest to them.

What about you?
Help is also available for parents. Support measures to look into include:
- The Tax Credit for Caregivers
- The Amount for Other Dependants
- Services aimed at families and loved ones of people with disabilities
- The support measure for parents of adults with severe disabilities. It is intended, among others, for parents who, before their child turned 18, received the Supplement for Handicapped Children Requiring Exceptional Care. The professional in charge of your child’s file will be able to give you more information.
In the event of incapacity
Do your child’s limitations make them incapable? You can take steps to continue representing them legally.
