Mental health: major issues off the radar?
Taking part in the forum on the status of mental health rights in Gaspé and the Magdalen Islands, Ombudsperson Raymonde Saint-Germain issued a reminder that upholding the rights of people grappling with mental illness is a major issue. In recent years, the Québec Ombudsman has never failed to sound the alarm regularly, whether by making recommendations after conducting investigations or by producing reports on this subject. As Raymonde Saint-Germain explains in her latest annual report, not much progress has been made in terms of services to people with mental illness. She goes on to call for a new mental health action plan by the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, the former one having expired in 2010.
