A bill to improve highway safety – A lack of transparency
The purpose of Bill 57 is to broaden the use of traffic control devices, namely, radar devices and red light camera systems. In a letter to the Chair of the Committee on Transportation and the Environment, the Ombudsperson fully endorses the goal of improving highway safety through the use of these devices. However, she believes that the bill:
- dilutes the obligation to erect signs or signals announcing the presence of the devices;
- deprives passenger vehicle owners who have received a statement of offence of the possibility of identifying the person who was behind the wheel at the time of the offence (there is a declaration form for other categories of drivers).
