Waiting list to find a family doctor: what you need you know about priority ranking

The complaint

A couple over age 75 registered on the waiting list to find a family doctor (GAMF). They were told that the wait time was at least a year. Considering this delay unreasonable, they complained to the Québec Ombudsman.

The investigation

  • Having been advised that their family doctor would be retiring soon, the couple registered on GAMF.

  • They were informed that it would take at least a year before a doctor was assigned to them.

  • However, one of them needed regular medical monitoring because of his health condition. He could not understand why the delay was so long.

  • The investigation by the Québec Ombudsman showed that the couple had not indicated on the web form that they wanted a nurse to assess their state of health.

  • As a result, no one had contacted them and they were given a ranking of C on a scale of A to E, when, in fact, they need urgent medical management.

The result

Further to the Québec Ombudsman’s intervention, a nurse promptly assessed the spouses’ state of health and their priority ranking went from C to A. They were assigned a family doctor immediately.
