Body

The Québec Ombudsman received a report regarding the inadequate environment in which dialysis is provided to Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont patients. The report concerned the temperature of the premises, cleanliness and infection prevention, among other things.

The investigation by the Québec Ombudsman showed that the environment in which people who receive dialysis at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont is inadequate.

  • For several years, dialysis has been dispensed in trailers adjacent to Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont. These facilities are in poor repair (leaky roof and traces of mould, etc.) and there is insufficient room to meet the ever-growing demand for dialysis.
  • The temperature in the premises is inadequate for a place where care is provided (too cold in winter and too hot in summer).
  • The screens used in the dialysis units are not cleaned in compliance with the standards in effect.

Construction of dialysis infrastructure at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont is slated to begin in 2017. Dialysis should begin to be offered in the new premises by January 2019.

The Québec Ombudsman felt that it was unacceptable that, in the meantime, patients continue to receive dialysis in an inadequate and unsafe environment. That is why it made three recommendations to Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont, which pledged to implement them. The Québec Ombudsman is satisfied with the measures produced by Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont in response to its recommendations.
